Low Tuition Universities in Chile with Tuition Fees

In today’s post, we are considering the list of low tuition universities and colleges in Chile, the tuition fees, cost of living in Chile as an international student, admission requirements and how to apply for admission in Chilean institutions. But before we go into that in detail, let us look into Chile as an educational country.

Chile is the country of great poets and literary stars like Nobel laureates Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, as well as international bestsellers Isabel Allende and Roberto Bola-no. It is a long, narrow country stretching along

South America's western edge, with more than 6,000km of Pacific Ocean coastline. It is situated in South America and is today one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations.
Upon successful graduation of secondary school, students may easily continue into higher education.

The higher education schools in Chile consist of Chilean Traditional Universities and are divided into public universities or private universities. There are medical schools and both the Universidad de Chile and Universidad Diego Portales offer law schools in a partnership with Yale University.

Tuition Fees in Chile

The tuition fees at universities in Chile are not so cheap and affordable especially when compared to other good study destinations in South America. One may think that this only applies to private universities but surprisingly, is the same issue for public institutions. However, Students studying at private institutions now pay about US$5,500 on average per year.

Similarly, public universities now charge at the same tuition rate. Students of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), irrespective of country of origin,  are likely to be charged a little more, at around US$5,900, while students of medicine can budget something higher again, with average tuition fees standing at around US$6,300 per year.

How to Apply

In Chile, the pattern of the degree studies is nearly like that used in the EU and US, consisting of Licenciatura (similar to a bachelor’s degree), Magister (similar to master’s degree) and Doctor (similar to Ph.D.). The Licenciatura is generally a four-year program, though certain subject areas such as engineering or architecture may need a longer period of study.

Undergraduates applying to state universities in Chile have to take a test called the Prueba de Seleccion Universitaria (PSU), similar to the SAT test usually used in the US. Individual university sets its own PSU entry requirement, with ‘traditional’ universities generally demanding higher scores than the newer private universities.

International students desiring to study in the universities in Chile will also need to show their ability to study in Spanish. Lowtuitionuniversities recommend that you visit your university of choice's webpage for more information on how to apply and the needed requirements.

Cost of Living

The living cost in Chile is not cheap when compared to most other Latin American countries. As an international student, if you budget about US$700 per month, it will certainly take care of your standard living expenses like feeding, accommodation, transport, stationery, etc. but something higher in the range of US$1,000 and US$1,100 will make your living sweet and enjoyable.
